Moving Accent Single Flammed Mill

What is a Moving Accent Single Flammed Mill?

The Moving Accent Single Flammed Mill combines the Single Flammed Mill pattern (lRRLR rLLRL) with moving accents. In each bar, the accent shifts one position forward while the flam remains in place at the beginning of each four-note grouping.

The sticking pattern stays the same, but the accent moves one note forward in each bar. This makes for an exercise that challenges your control over flams, accents, and the mill pattern simultaneously.

Tips for playing

  • Start slowly and focus on getting it right one bar at a time
  • Keep flams crisp and controlled
  • Execute clear accents without disrupting the flams
  • Maintain even spacing between notes
  • Connect bars smoothly as you shift accents
  • Keep grace notes light and consistent
  • Listen for clear distinction between accented and unaccented notes

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Flams becoming uneven when focusing on accents
  • Grace notes getting too heavy
  • Losing the mill pattern while managing accents
  • Rushing transitions between bars

Start at around 40 BPM and increase tempo only when you can maintain clean flams and clear accents throughout the pattern. Focus on precision rather than speed.
