Quintuplet Exercise #1

What is a Quintuplet Five Stroke Roll

A quintuplet five stroke roll divides each beat into five even notes using the sticking pattern RLLRR LRRLL. By learning this pattern, you'll develop better control over quintuplet timing and expand your vocabulary of drum fills.

Practice tips

  1. Begin slowly to ensure the 5 notes are evenly spaced within the crotchet beat
  2. Concentrate on the accented notes to keep the rhythm steady
  3. Gradually increase the tempo while maintaining stick control and timing
  4. Practice leading with both your right hand (RLLRR) and left hand (LRRLL)
  5. Incorporate dynamics by playing the accented notes louder than the unaccented notes

Applying quintuplets around the drum kit

Once you're comfortable playing quintuplet five stroke rolls, you can apply them to drum fills around the kit for creative phrasing. Here are some ideas:

  • Play the accented notes on different toms, with the unaccented notes on the snare drum
  • Orchestrate the accents on the snare, floor tom, and crash cymbal
  • Play the unaccented notes very quietly. Over time, bring the volume of the unaccented notes up

The possibilities are endless! Experiment with different sound sources, dynamics and combinations to create unique drum fills.
