Septuplet Exercise #1

Mastering Seven-Note Groupings

How to Play Septuplet Sticking Patterns

This exercise works with septuplets (groups of seven notes) using a mixed sticking pattern. Each measure contains two septuplet groups, with accents on the first note of each group. The sticking pattern (RRLRLRR LLRLRLL) creates a flow that challenges your coordination.

Tips for Playing Septuplet Rudiments on Drums

Start slow and focus on:

  • Even spacing across all seven notes
  • Clear accents on the first note of each group
  • Smooth transitions between hands
  • Consistent volume on unaccented notes

Common Septuplet Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing through the seven-note grouping
  • Getting confused with the sticking pattern
  • Uneven note spacing
  • Weak accents on group starts

Start at around 40 BPM and increase speed only when you can maintain clean execution of both the sticking pattern and the septuplet timing. This is an advanced exercise that requires patience to master.
