Left Accents #2 (Triplets)

How to Play Left Hand Triplet Accents

This exercise uses left hand triplets with a shifting accent pattern. Each measure contains four groups of triplets. In the first two triplet groups, the accent falls on the first note. In the last two triplet groups, the accent falls on the final note of each triplet.

Note: If your weak hand is your right hand, perform this exercise with the right hand instead.

Tips for Triplet Accent Control

Start slow and focus on:

  • Clear distinction between accented and unaccented notes
  • Even triplet spacing throughout
  • Relaxed grip despite accent changes
  • Smooth transitions between triplet groups

Common Triplet Accent Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing through unaccented notes
  • Losing the triplet feel when accenting
  • Tensing up during accent shifts
  • Breaking time between triplet groups

Start at around 40 BPM and increase speed only when you can maintain clean accents and consistent triplet timing. Take breaks when needed - sustained triplet patterns can be demanding on a single hand.
