Left Accents #1

What is Left Accents #1?

This exercise focuses exclusively on your weak hand, with a specific shifting accent pattern that simple but challenging. Each measure contains sixteen left hand strokes. For the first eight notes, each group of four starts with an accent. For the last eight notes, each group of four starts with an unaccented note. The pattern alternates between accented and unaccented notes throughout.

Note: If your weak hand is your right hand, perform this exercise with the right hand instead.

This type of concentrated weak hand work helps develop:

  • Independent control of accents
  • Endurance in your weaker hand
  • Consistent volume control
  • Even spacing between notes

Tips for Playing Left Hand Accents

Start slow and focus on:

  • Clear distinction between accented and unaccented notes
  • Steady rhythm throughout the pattern
  • Relaxed grip despite single-hand intensity
  • Even spacing between all notes

Common Mistakes in Single-Hand Accent Control

  • Tensing up during accented notes
  • Rushing through unaccented portions
  • Losing volume control as fatigue sets in
  • Breaking the pattern when transitioning between phrases

Start at around 30 BPM and increase speed only when you can maintain clear accents and consistent unaccented notes. Take breaks when needed - this type of focused single-hand exercise can seem deceptively simple.
