What is a double stroke roll?
With a Double Stroke Roll, you play two notes with one hand, then two with the other hand. The basic structure is:
- Two rights followed by two lefts (RRLLRRLL)
- Each hand plays at the same volume level
- It can be played open or closed (slow or buzzing)
The key to getting this rudiment down lies in developing smooth, controlled doubles with each hand. Start slow and focus on:
- Even spacing between each pair of notes
- Clean hand switches after each double
- Consistent volume on both strokes
- Relaxed wrist motion for natural rebound
