Double Stroke Roll

What is a double stroke roll?

With a Double Stroke Roll, you play two notes with one hand, then two with the other hand. The basic structure is:

  • Two rights followed by two lefts (RRLLRRLL)
  • Each hand plays at the same volume level
  • It can be played open or closed (slow or buzzing)

The key to getting this rudiment down lies in developing smooth, controlled doubles with each hand. Start slow and focus on:

  • Even spacing between each pair of notes
  • Clean hand switches after each double
  • Consistent volume on both strokes
  • Relaxed wrist motion for natural rebound
