What is a flam?
A flam is a grace note (light stroke) followed by a primary stroke. The basic structure is:
- One quiet grace note followed immediately by an accented primary note
- Hands strike almost together, grace note slightly ahead
- Can start with either hand (lR or rL)
Getting your flams right requires precise timing. Start slow and focus on:
- Consistent grace note volume
- Strong primary note accent
- Even spacing between hands
- Clean hand-to-hand movement
