What is a nine stroke roll?

The basic structure of the Nine Stroke Roll is:

• Four double strokes followed by an accented quarter note (RRLLRRLLR)
• Next note grouping starts with opposite hand (LLRRLLRRL)

Mastering this pattern requires control of the double strokes and accents and the ability to keep track of which hand you start each note grouping with. Start slow and focus on:

• Four clean double strokes
• Strong accent on the final quarter note
• Smooth hand switch between patterns
• Even spacing throughout the doubles
