What is a drag paradiddle #1?

The Drag Paradiddle #1, also known as Dragadiddle #1, blends a drag with the paradiddle pattern. The basic structure is:

  • Drag is inserted after the first note of a single paradiddle: RllRLRR and then flip the hands so that you get LrrLRLL
  • Accent on the first note of paradiddle and the primary note of the drag

If you want to master this rudiment, learning proper articulation is key. Start slow and focus on:

  • Quick, light grace notes
  • Even spacing after drag
  • Clean alternating singles
  • Smooth pattern transitions
