Single Paradiddle

What is a single paradiddle?

The Single Paradiddle combines alternating single and double strokes. The basic structure is:

  • Evenly spaced notes
  • The sticking pattern is RLRR LRLL
  • First note of each group of four is typically accented
  • Creates a natural rebound pattern

Developing this essential rudiment requires close attention to the hands. Start slow and focus on:

  • Clean transitions between singles and doubles
  • Strong accents at the start of every four-note grouping
  • Even spacing between all notes
  • Natural rebound on the doubles
