Single Stroke Roll

What is a single stroke roll?

The Single Stroke Roll is a basic rudiment that consists of alternating right and left hand strokes (RLRL RLRL). While it may seem simple, mastering this rudiment at various speeds is essential for:

  • Building clean, consistent hand technique
  • Developing stamina for extended passages
  • Creating a foundation for more complex patterns

Start by practicing quarter notes, then eighth notes, and gradually work up to sixteenth notes and beyond. Focus on:

  • Even spacing between all notes
  • Equal volume between right and left hands
  • Relaxed grip to prevent tension and fatigue
  • Maintaining control and clarity at faster tempos
